MISSIO DEI

The Mission of God

Mission Conviction

Missio Dei: The Mission of God

The Bible declares that missions is a God-fueled and Christ-centered enterprise which has as its main pursuit the spread of God’s glory among all peoples. Those who proclaim His glory are NOT “volunteers,” but rather are those under Christ’s commission, called and sent for the sake of His Name. Gripped themselves by His glory, they see themselves as infinitely privileged to be co-workers with the Lord of Glory in His work.

From beginning to end, the Bible testifies to God’s passion for His glory. In Isaiah 48:11, God declares that His glory is the ultimate “end” of His actions: “For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; For how can My name be profaned? And My glory I will not give to another.” It must necessarily follow, then, that the spread of His glory is the chief end for which missions exists. To miss God’s primary passion for missions is to miss the heart of missions.
The real question is not whether or not we are to be involved in missions, nor is it how many missionaries we support; rather how can we as a church live and breathe and serve so as to share God’s zeal for His own glory in the spread of His glorious gospel to every corner of this earth. “It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also make You a light of the nations so that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6).

Mission Commitment

Supporting our Missionary Partners

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you,
always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all,
in view of your participation in the gospel
from the first day until now”

(Philippians 1:3-5)

WORLD MISSION TEAM: Prayer Support

The mission team gathers regularly to pray for the spread of the Gospel around the world and lift up any specific and special needs among our missionaries. As mission reps, members of the mission team also communicate with and report specific praises and prayer needs of their assigned missionary to their respective fellowship groups. (Eph. 6:18-19; see also Phil. 1:19-20).

SHORT-TERM MISSIONS:  Moral Support

“Because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service to me” (Phil. 2:30). Short term trips enable us to visit and minister to and alongside our missionaries when the opportunity arises. Short term missions is a vital means to expand our view of Christ’s work around the world, to minister tangibly in teaching or serving to our partners in Gospel ministry, and to develop lasting relationships on the field. HOSPITALITY: Home Support

It is a joy to receive missionaries. Our church does not desire to have a list of missionaries, but as a family, to develop and maintain personal relationship with our co-laborers. “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor …contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality” (Rom. 12:10-13). This may involve long term periods during fuloughs or with seminary students, or it may involve short term visits of guest missionaries whom we welcome and then send off in a “manner worthy of God … because they went forth for the sake of His Name” (3 John 5-8).

GIVING: Financial Support

Faith-produced “cheerful” giving brings great glory to God: ” … No church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only … you sent aid once and again for my necessities” (Phil. 4:15-16). Our church has a separate missions fund distinct from the general budget. Giving for missions is considered above and beyond giving for the general budget. A regular commitment to the missions budget has allowed us to continue to provide regular support for missionaries and nationals as well as send our own teachers to equip pastors and leaders around the world. Mission Sending

Sending Gospel Preachers to All Peoples

The Lord’s commission to make disciples begins with the simple verb “to go”: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19). Going to all peoples is not optional. Therefore, CBC is committed to sending and supporting men who hold to the full authority and sufficiency of Scripture, a Christ-centered and Christ-exalting exposition of the Word, and the doctrines of grace. They are men who themselves will train and send men with the same convictions. All of this is done with the goal of planting churches that will plant other churches.

Mission Sending

Training Those Whom Christ Has Called

CBC is committed to train men called to expository preaching and to shepherd the church. To accomplish this, we focus on two broad areas of leadership training (2 Timothy 2:2):

Local/On-site Training
  • Leadership Training and Development (LTD) is a two-year intensive discipleship training  for leaders at Community Bible Church.
  • The Cornerstone College and Seminary trains men who are called to plant churches and train leaders both here and abroad.
  • The Annual Pastor’s Conference: The Exalting Christ Conference for pastors and church leaders is designed to encourage and build up leaders involved in the work of the ministry.

Global/International Training
  • We send men to preach and exposit God’s Word, as well as teach and equip national pastors and leaders in conferences and training centers around the world. We partner with local churches and leadership training ministries in such places as Uganda, India, Myanmar, Philippines, Honduras, Mexico, Sudan, Germany, and South Africa.
  • We publish and distribute teaching materials and books through Exalting Christ Publishing to ministries and leaders in various ministries around the world.
